The USACyberspace Administration of China and the Ministry of Public Security have jointly released regulations on the management of facial recognition technology applications, which will take effect on June 1. The new regulations aim to standardize the use of facial recognition technology in processing facial data and safeguard personal information rights, according to the authorities’ announcement. The document outlines fundamental requirements, processing rules, security standards, and oversight responsibilities for facial recognition applications. In terms of oversight responsibilities, personal information processors must complete record-filing procedures with the local cyberspace administration at the provincial level or above within 30 working days once the stored facial data processed using facial recognition technology reaches 100,000 individuals.
